Alert: Expanding Local Kratom Bans in IL, CA, MS, WA Threaten Sales & Shipping

* Effective immediately or soon, numerous cities and counties in [Illinois](https://kratombans.com/states/illinois-kratom-legal-status), [California](https://kratombans.com/states/california-kratom-legal-status), [Mississippi](https://kratombans.com/states/mississippi-kratom-legal-status), and [Washington](https://kratombans.com/states/washington-kratom-legal-status) have enacted or will enact bans on kratom sales and/or possession. * Merchants face heightened risk of payment processor scrutiny, transaction declines, and potential account termination for sales into newly prohibited jurisdictions. * Strict adherence to updated shipping restrictions is crucial to avoid legal penalties and seizure of goods in affected localities.
Local governments are intensifying their crackdown on kratom, with an expanding list of cities and counties enacting bans throughout 2026. This follows an FDA recommendation for 7-hydroxymitragynine to become a Schedule I substance, leading to widespread confusion and local legislative action.
Key Impacts for Merchants:
- Immediate Legal Status Changes: Numerous localities in Illinois, California, Mississippi, and Washington have implemented or will soon implement bans on the sale and/or possession of kratom. This includes full bans in Morton, Pekin, East Peoria, Washington, Bloomington, Pike County, Peoria Heights, and Tremont in Illinois; Tupelo and Lee County in Mississippi; and sales bans in Orange (City), Dana Point, and Spokane in Washington. Anaheim, California has an extract ban (>2% 7-OH).
- Payment Processing/Bank Stability Risks: The proliferation of local bans significantly increases the risk for merchants. Selling into prohibited jurisdictions can lead to payment processor scrutiny, transaction declines, chargebacks, and potential termination of merchant accounts due to non-compliance.
- Shipping/Logistics Warnings: Merchants must immediately update their shipping policies and geo-fencing to prevent sales and shipments to these newly banned areas. Failure to do so risks legal penalties, product seizure, and significant operational disruptions.
Merchants are advised to regularly monitor local ordinances in these states and others, as the trend of local bans is expected to continue.
